"Chowski tried to avoid the highways because he feared someone would try to get him, but sometimes it was necessary. He was able to shed that leash, which had become very bothersome."

Chowski is a little schnauzer who belongs to Paula Meyers, a little girl from Junction in central Texas. He earns the moniker "Famous" when he rescues his family from a house fire by barking and waking them up. the family's life uprooted when they have to temporarily relocate to Dallas until they can build a new home. Paula, however, has an asthma attack brought on by stress and has to go to the hospital in Kerrville, while her dog stays in Dallas. But Chowski misses Paula and escapes from his Dallas home as soon as he has a chance. Encountering various perils, such as a coyote attack and a bout with food poisoning, Chowski makes it back to Junction and to Paula's former home. The family is finally united when a neighbor spots Chowski and alerts Paula's father. Chowski is famous once again for making the long journey from Dallas to Junction.

This is a cute children's story with charming illustrations and easy-to-read text. It seems like it could be based on a true story, but there is no mention of this in the book. The book can be read in one sitting, and the pictures are appealing to children. This is a good tool be used in the classroom or to be read aloud to young kids. There are a few misspellings in the text that slow the plot down, but overall, this book would be perfect for most young readers who love dogs and animals in general.
