The girl, as she is simply referred to in Corchin's delightful picture book, has a plan to help a friend in need. So, of course, she hands out a YES to her friend. It is a BIG YES that is needed, but the girl figures she can spare it. That friend then tells another friend how helpful she had been, and more friends begin asking for help, with more and more YES's offered in the name of kindness. Giving away so many YES's freely begins to take its toll on work and time. The helpful effects lessen, and the girl becomes lonely, sad, and exhausted. She fashions a special YES just for herself, trying "new and interesting ways to create them." Others quickly notice and ask for their own new YES's, which the girl politely declines. Explaining she can no longer give away her own YES's, she instead offers to show friends how they themselves can make them, even offering use of her creative tools. This new approach benefits everyone as she and all her friends happily make "spectacular new YES's" together.
This title, by the same author-illustrator team behind the award-winning A Thousand No's, is an exceptionally eye-catching, colorful picture book that presents its message in a unique and distinctive way, thanks to its distinctive diction and fresh, minimalist language approach. A significant lesson about the importance of setting and maintaining healthy boundaries is brought to life through humor, a dash of sass and silliness, and an abundance of creatively imagined and illustrated young characters. Even the multitude of YES's are arranged and presented throughout each page in a most creative and whimsical manner. Indeed, each individual YES appears very much as its own character and is delightfully distinctive. This fun and fascinating read is pleasant, pleasing, and poignant.
