Brave New You: Strategies, Tools, and Neurohacks to Live More Courageously Every Day
by Mary Poffenroth, Ph.D.
Workman Publishing Company, an Imprint of Hachette Book Group

"Neurohacks are physical and psychological non-invasive shortcuts that will boost memory, focus, and creativity and help you feel more satisfied and powerful."

This powerful book about unlocking your “inner bravery” through letting go of your fears begins with an introduction and is comprised of three parts and eleven chapters, followed by a listing of numerous sources and an index. It examines how fear is our ally and a normal emotion which motivates us to take action, but that there is factual vs. fictional fear. We can learn courage to cope with various types of fear. The author discusses the science behind fear, how we are hardwired for fear, and that there are biological keys to courage.

The book also discusses fight/flight/freeze/flinch/fawn. It explores societal fear and fearmongering, especially through the media, societal pressures, and the need to decrease exposure to fearful communications. In examining the keys to courage, the author utilizes the RAIN method: R, or recognize the physical aspects of fear; A, or assign a name to the emotion; Identify, or ask questions about the fear; and N, or navigate by using the neurohacks to cope and move through the fear. The chapters offer coping skills, including physiological techniques, cognitive-behavioral tips, journaling, breath work, action steps, touch, and repetitive movements.

Astutely written, the book offers significant information regarding fear, courage, letting go of fear, and specific techniques to help cope with unnecessary fear. While some fear is needed, “Often, our greatest battles are those that take place within the confines of our own minds.” This is the fear that this book addresses in a reader-friendly manner through illustrations, exercises, stories (including personal stories), and professional studies. Poffenroth's research adds a more professional touch to the work. It is well-organized, flows easily, and will be valuable for those struggling with fear and with letting go of it through the neurohacks.
