But I Meant Well!

"People on the train did not know what I was laughing about—I’m sure they thought I was nuts!"

Life can be full of comedy, assuming you know where to look and how to have a sense of humor about things. The author of this collection of anecdotes recalls scenes from otherwise mundane days that just happened to play out in interesting or humorous ways. From the subways and buses of New York City to cruise liners and even simple elevators, each location is rife with strange behaviors and wacky behavior. Dozens upon dozens of stories are collected here, organized largely by the setting in which they occur. The author also recalls plenty of hilarious memories from his youth and adolescence. The world can be a frightening and threatening place, but with the right perspective, even moments of brewing conflict and irritation can become lighthearted causes for laughter and disbelief.

Rather than being comprised of a long narrative in a sequence designed to lead to some larger point, this is a volume of stories about not taking things too seriously, and as such, deserves the same treatment. Each story is only a few pages at most, so this book is an excellent mid-day mood lifter, perfect for sharing with friends and laughing together. The way that the stories are organized not by time but by where they take place gives some cohesion and consistency, and readers can imagine the scenes playing out as they are written, even if some of them seem straight out of a movie or television comedy. Laugh-out-loud funny and ridiculous, these stories are a reflection of the author’s point of view and character, and readers will delight in these stories and no doubt look at their own lives a little differently, looking for a humorous comparison.
