Humanity and technology interact and clash in this science fiction thriller that is set in the near future. An ambitious woman named Jackie Jill has risen above her difficult life and politics to hold a position in the United States administration. Drones, political and personal dysfunctional relationships, and frequent threats of war and destruction by technology threaten the Earth as human beings respond to one another and their global as well as personal environments much as they have throughout history with deals, information exchange and suppression, love, fear, and attempts at accommodation to situations that appear to be out of human control, even as they try to cope.
The book is reminiscent of the stories and lessons in many genres that were presented in different, sometimes gentler ways that suited the times in which they were given, but that still carried strong, urgent messages. Two examples are The Day The Earth Stood Still (but with a factor of ten for the potential destruction) and the allegorical tale The Answer, with much more technology. Additionally, the message from the comic strip Pogo: "We have met the enemy and he is us" seems to resonate in this work. Jackie Jill's name may also hold significance, as it combines the names of two former first ladies. Jackie Jill is a political workhorse who is attractive to men, and she uses that power. The strength of this book lies in its gritty reminders and symbols that people sow what they reap, and there is a point at which destruction may be unavoidable, even as we seek ways to achieve stability amid dangerously unstable events.
