Harland Redwine, a wealthy American who founded Redwine Pharma—a global empire he built from the ground up—is traveling on a cruise ship with his family and fellow passengers. During the cruise, Harland is killed in what initially appears to be an accident. Witnesses agree on two key points: Harland lunged toward his wife, Zelia, along with Chuck, their trainer, and Chuck struck Harland hard. However, they disagree on two important aspects. Some say Harland was violent and ran angrily toward his wife, while others claim he looked upset and was rushing to her for help. Later in the investigation, it is discovered that Redwine had been poisoned with strychnine between three hours and ten minutes before he was struck and fell.
In his novel, Edge successfully explores the theme of appearances, which can be deceiving. The death of Harland is not straightforward for either the characters or the readers, as both groups discover the events simultaneously. As a result, the audience and the novel's cast experience the same feelings while trying to understand what really caused Harland's death. The author effectively connects his readers to the characters throughout this journey, enhancing the overall reading experience and fostering increasing empathy for the characters' struggles. Moreover, each character has a distinctive voice that sets them apart. The dialogue offers insight into the characters' personalities, making them more relatable and engaging. Mystery and suspense fans will appreciate this book for its many twists and turns, which keep them immersed in the narrative and on the edge of their seats throughout.
