"I look at her in disbelief, and we both grin deviously… the world is our playground."

Jax is a college student who indulges in the typical undergraduate pastimes of partying, gaming, and procrastinating. His favorite game is "Dark Agenda," an interactive game in which elite soldiers battle secret, nefarious governments. The primary joy Jax gets from playing the game is in his fun and flirtatious interactions with Kat, a group member in the role-playing game. Jax fancies Kat and asks to meet her outside the digital universe. After their initial date, he is enamored with Kat and can't wait for the next time they see each other. As their relationship develops, Jax sees that Kat's life is far from ordinary. There is an aura of mystery surrounding Kat and her family, and Jax is about to be dragged into their orbit. Soon, Jax will be facing an adventure greater than any he's played in a gaming simulation.

This story of a young man who goes from college slacker to brave protector is full of adventure, humor, and romance. While Jax possesses elements of youthful immaturity, the feelings he has for Kat embolden him in his decisions. While some might see Jax's actions as rash or dangerous, the love he has for Kat provides all the reasoning he needs. While the story begins with the makings of a 90s rom-com, the action in the narrative picks up when Kat is put in danger, and Jax decides to collaborate with Kat's father on a dangerous rescue mission. While the story doesn't always take itself too seriously, it does feature distinct elements of the hero's journey. This is a better-than-average read with an appeal beyond the young adult crowd.
