Death by Roses

"Why am I yelling at a ghost – and more to the point, why has a ghost just insulted me?"

This highly entertaining novel focuses primarily on two very different women, Mae Rose McElroy and Mary Lee Broadmoor, and how their lives interact and how their personalities eventually become one body. Mae Rose, a homemaker in a very unhappy marriage, dies of a heart attack while on the toilet. Her long-suffering husband, Art, made a decision to try to make her happy, only to be thwarted in this attempt before finding her dead. On the other hand, there is wealthy Mary Lee, the queen of horror, who is dying of pancreatic cancer and trying to write her last story before she dies.

Mae Rose violates a spiritual principle on the other side of the spiritual veil after she dies because she keeps manipulating the lives of her Earth-bound family and ends up in the body of Mary Lee, who has a strange episode and is healed from the cancer. The two women have to learn to live together in the body and manage their lives while making a hit new movie based on the life of Mae Rose and her family. But the biggest story question is this: Why does the toilet keep flushing?

Exceptionally well-written, this humorous and whimsical novel addresses a variety of issues, including relationships, affairs, grief and loss, death and dying, sex and sexuality, and spirituality and the afterlife. At times, it is laugh-out-loud funny and shows the afterlife with a sense of humor. The book also demonstrates insight into people taking responsibility for themselves and making healthy, life-changing choices and behaviors, and it shows the importance of love between family and friends. The character development is exquisite, even for the minor characters. This is definitely a must-read.
