Help Yourself! ...  a Story of FBI Corruption
by Martin L. Kaiser III
Trafford Publishing

"This investigation also revealed that FBI officials used the Confidential Fund to cash personal checks."

Kaiser tells his extraordinary tale about how he was, in his own words, basically Q from the James Bond movies. He would later lose it all due to corruption within the Federal Bureau of Investigation. At one time, the author was the United States Government’s top “technical eavesdropping spymaster.” As it’s explained, he was manufacturing intelligence equipment (bugs) and counterintelligence equipment (bug detectors) for the FBI and other intelligence agencies in the country. Kaiser weaves a tale that few could imagine. Not only was he creating remarkable advancements for the U.S. Government, but he wasn’t afraid to question their ethics, even if it cost him a lot.

Kaiser starts his tale with a prologue about his life. He was born in 1935 in Pennsylvania. He goes into detail about how, as a boy, he was fascinated by radio and learning Morse code, which paved the way for his future. He then recounts his days in college, though he quickly learns it’s not for him, and ends up working at RCA Laboratories as a research technician. Kaiser shares extensive information about the electronic equipment he designed in that role, which is mind-blowing, and that’s before readers get to the juicer details.

Kaiser’s early years are just as intriguing as the scandal that rocked his life later on. When looking at this from a technical sense, the narrative flow is strong throughout, and Kaiser has a way with his words. Recently, stories about whistleblowers have become increasingly popular, particularly on streaming sites, and this intriguing account is likely to shock just as much as those docuseries.
