Mark Jans, valedictorian of Hofstra University's class of 1999, contemplates his newly earned diploma, which declares he has been awarded a "B.A. in Communications and a Minor in Theology." He plans to return home with his parents and pursue publication of his book, The Loneliness of Man, which "illustrated man's fruitless search for meaning in life" and the importance of Divine intervention in finding peace. Mark is also considering going to seminary. However, his post-college plans are upended when his parents reveal they have sold their home to move to Florida. Mark experiences an existential crisis, which leads him to escape to the Big Apple. Soon he meets a beautiful, heavily pierced punk teenage girl named Astra. They soon discover they are philosophical opposites, yet they are drawn to each other. But Astra's past holds secrets that threaten her mental wellness, and she is compelled to return home and face her demons, leaving Mark brokenhearted.
Perone's coming-of-age novel is an example of how a master storyteller seamlessly blends multiple themes into a cohesive whole. The novel touches upon such themes as mental health, rape, Christianity, individual identity, and love. Opposites, Mark and Astra both struggle with finding meaning in life. As they grow closer, their conversations, especially about Mark's Christian faith, present deep, thoughtful conversations that illustrate their different points of view.
