My Sister's Keeper
by Ralph Dellapiana

"She knew she may not look like she was ready to fight in her little black dress, and she expected they would underestimate her. That would give her an advantage."

Bella is a smart, beautiful young woman on the way to the prom. While waiting outside for her date, who decides to sneak into a dive bar, Bella is kidnapped. She nearly evades the attack thanks to her extensive martial arts training, but the sheer number of attackers gives them the advantage. She soon realizes she has been caught up in a human trafficking ring and is going to be sold to a wealthy man. Bella decides to fight to escape at every opportunity.

Bella also has an advantage that the crime ring doesn't expect. She is being watched over by a secretive group of women known as the Sisterhood. As soon as Bella is kidnapped, the Sisterhood acts. One of their full members, along with Mia, a friend of Bella's father and a Sisterhood initiate, begins a rescue mission. Mia learns that this mission will also cause her to confront someone from her past, whom she thought was dead.

Dellapiana's action title is a fast-paced thriller full of femme fatales with extraordinary combat skills. It is a quick, easy read with clear writing, focused on adventure and fight scenes. Bella and Mia are engaging protagonists with enough background to be well-rounded. In contrast, the antagonists are one-dimensional in their evil, making them easy to loathe. The action scenes often lean into the absurd, and the sexual descriptions tend to be more distracting than worldbuilding elements. Still, action lovers who enjoy over-the-top fights will be entertained by these capable women dishing out punishment to deserving bad guys.
