Poetic Reflection in Sedulous Romantica
by Dr. Harry John Visser, II
Olympus Story House

"It is not easy in this world
To lose one's way
But, my love, you have been the light
That has shown my way"

The warmth of words can act as a safe haven, a welcoming harbor. In much the same way, this poetry compilation kindles the fire of life, exploring the intricacies of human connection through the vignette of the poet's unyielding love for his wife and the softness of nature. While the poems themselves are unnamed, they are undoubtedly connected, flowing seamlessly into one another and creating a feel-good vibe that persists throughout the work.

One of the most striking elements of Visser's work is his attention to detail as he expresses his gratitude for the normal day-to-day experiences that are anything but normal for him. It is evident that he cherishes every moment, from the mornings when the sun's rays reflect off his wife's "flaxen hair," to "the green fields" that are like a velvet carpet as she walks through the grass. In the adulation and adoration that the poet bestows upon his spouse, he creates a strong connection and instant relatability. Further, an intriguing factor is the level of microscopic detail with which Visser examines life's moments; it is a direct parallel to his profession as a medical practitioner. Undoubtedly, the tactical precision and rigid structure of medicine, however, is in direct contrast to the softness of Visser's words.

Stylistically, his command of figurative language creates pleasant imagery. For instance, phrases like "lake of silence" and "soft rain patters" use personification to evoke an inviting mood of relaxation. At the same time, his use of alliteration and repetition is equally potent and timely, varying the prose and infusing it with energy, especially the consistent yet compelling "Her," which further exemplifies how love's light can free one from the prison of sadness and despair.

The author's love is infinite and permeates everything he comes into contact with. Viewing his wife as his inspiration, every poem delves into his devotion, perfectly capturing the recurring metaphor of light and dark that runs through the compilation. There is admiration, yet there is also longing, a delicate balance between romanticising the purity of love and yearning for the sensuous experience that togetherness and intimacy bring with his beloved. More than that, however, it is Visser's knack for describing the particular moments that are forever etched into his heart: the peaceful, sleeping face; the intoxicating scent that precedes her arrival; the gentle caress of intertwining fingers. Impeccable timing adds a surreal feel and gives readers the sense that they are not reading words but experiencing a cinematic snapshot of these moments.

"The soft breath of the spring," fall's crisp breath, and a regular dose of such imagery illuminate the direct connection between love and nature. Sometimes, the poetry shifts to how love completes one's day, bringing peace and comfort following a day full of intensity. In essence, the work has a very musical quality that brings the work to life, resplendent with a cornucopia of color that yields an overall refreshing experience.

Above all else, however, Visser's humanness is endearing, showing audiences that even medical professionals, who are perceived to be hardened on the outside, have a fervent, beating heart on the inside that seeks the same warmth and love to complete them. Visser's work ultimately captures the countless shades of love and distills them into words to provide an exhilarating experience (and reminder) of both the beauty and the fleeting nature of time and love.
