Fargotstein documents her discovery, appreciation, use of, and journey with acorns and their lore in this tribute. In addition to being the seeds from which oaks grow, the nuts have nutritional and medicinal value that some European cultures that settled in the US overlooked, but Indigenous Americans appreciated. Oak trees have been regarded as sacred in many cultures, including the Greek and Nordic. The trees are considered to symbolize such qualities as wisdom, interconnection with nature, and divinity. In addition to their use by Indigenous Americans for religious practices, acorns and other products from the trees provide nutritional and medical benefits, such as reducing inflammation and blood sugar, once the acorns have been processed.
Fargotstein learned the business of creating, manufacturing, and distributing her product, and she, like many entrepreneurs, dealt with barriers and setbacks. She networked with organizations, acquired the appropriate certification, learned the method of producing acorn bars, and bought the appropriate equipment. The author persevered, and the processes that she followed or developed are documented in this excellent manuscript.
Fargotstein's passion for her subject is evident in the narrative. The writing makes it clear how she diligently researched many facets of the qualities and uses of acorns and oak trees during her journey to develop her acorn bar brand. Fargotstein also learned about the acorn as she developed some new attitudes about her life. The experiences were rewarding for her spiritually and intellectually. She developed the product by seeking to integrate education with wisdom and respect for ecosystems, and to educate humans about the vital roles they play in sustaining the planet and its life. When wisdom, care, and respect are major components in commerce, the person in charge, in this case the author, truly earns the designation of a conscientious proprietor.
