The Badger Brothers

Xlibris

"Under his breath, Brett said to Bartt, 'That's all we need, advice from a lisping, twitching, mangy, ssstrange cat.'"

This children's book for older readers is a delightful tale about twin badgers, Brett and Bartt, who live with their parents near Rancher Wayne's property. The twins, like all badgers, love to dig, and they love to dig on Rancher Wayne's property. They are good at avoiding the rancher's badger traps, but the rancher is upset about their latest holes and goes to buy "presents" for the badgers.

Ranger, the cat, is upset that the badgers stuck him in a hole and buried him up to his neck, and they make an agreement that they won't hurt him as long as he won't chase the baby badgers. In the meantime, while Rancher Wayne is away buying better traps to catch the twins, the badgers dig into a pipe and bite it, causing water to spew. They run to their parents, and their father, who is the Mayor of Badgerville, calls all the badgers to help save the day. The ending emphasizes the golden rule of being a good neighbor and living in harmony.

Exceptionally well written, this book is unique, amusing, and engaging, with illustrations to back up the tale. It is fun to read, and children and adults will easily be able to visualize the badgers' antics alongside the other characters courtesy of the fitting artwork. The book's epilogue is an excellent summary of how everyone, including people and animals, can live in peace and harmony, and is a teaching moment for children. Although the narrative features a cat with an unfortunate lisp, this could be used as a teaching moment about judgmentalism. Overall, this story will leave readers laughing.
