Wordle Limericks

"His eyes were gray and rather beady; he had the air of one who's greedy."

Wordle is a game where players try to guess a five-letter word. The game was particularly popular during the COVID-19 pandemic when the world was shut down. It's still around, though it's now owned by The New York Times. However, that's besides the point. Flam has created a collection of limericks based on the word of the day from June 19, 2021 to July 24, 2022. In total, there are 400 poems for readers to enjoy and potentially to remember from those days.

The author's ingenuity is on full display here as he takes a popular word game and uses it as a whole theme. Flam kicks off the collection with a limerick titled "Cigar," which brings up former President Clinton and his scandal. Limericks are supposed to be bawdy, and Flam doesn't disappoint. Readers will definitely be chuckling while reading this collection. The verses are ironic, weird, nonsensical, at times obscene, and ultimately hilarious.

Flam's writing is good, and there is a lot of personality in his words. Not everything is straightforward for the reader, which prompts one to think for a few seconds, but then the laughter starts. The writing is smart and not just thrown together to make the reader gasp, but to think. The innuendos are everywhere, and Flam uses them to his advantage. And if the reader ever does feel stumped, Flam has helpful footnotes to select limericks, including "Cigar" for those who weren't around in the '90s. Overall, this is something not to miss, even if the reader hasn't ever played a game of Wordle.
