Before the Music
by Marie Claire Peck

"I don't believe in divorce, but God does not expect us to live like this. He expects men to love and respect their wives, not attempt to kill them."

Growing up in a dysfunctional environment, Marie Claire Peck endured both childhood abuse and later marital abuse. In the interest of helping others facing similar circumstances, Peck has channeled the turmoil and tragedy of her life into a triumphant writing career. In this sequel to her first novel, Don't Tell, Baby, the author again places herself as the central character in a dramatic, multi-faceted storyline.

Part truths, part fiction, the events in Before the Music cleverly unfold within a complex narrative that moves within a circular framework. From Washington's Vashon Island and Seattle, to the open space of Idaho and back, readers are drawn to the emotions of Marie Claire as she does her best to maintain a positive attitude in a marriage to a self-centered, controlling man. While she finds solace at the ranch where she trains horses, and teaches riding, her husband's emotional and physical outbursts prove so violent, that divorce becomes her only option. Ultimately with her faith in God, and the help of newly found friends, family, and love, Marie Claire settles into a new life. Her ex-husband's problematic return, forces her into survival mode where she stands her ground, and ultimately helps to solve a mystery from the past.

The author's strong religious beliefs effortlessly translate to the Marie Claire character, as Bible teachings and prayer serve as empowering components woven throughout the dialogue. Peck's writing is truly heartfelt and personal. Perhaps more importantly, it brings to mind the somber thought that her own first hand experience with the subject matter is what allows her to bring such authenticity and detail to the novel. Fortunately, strength, hope, faith, and love have also made the real Marie Claire, a survivor.
