In six sections and 162 pages of text, this handbook offers basic insights into the needs of graduates entering the work force, although it will be valuable for other consumers. The focus is on fifty basic practices, beginning by exploring definitions of practice and work terms. Section One: The Start, explores the basic needs for starting your work such as showing up early and leaving late, while Section Two: Building Your Role, examines quality, teams, and hustle. Section Three: Focus Your Effort, discusses listening, ethics, and building relationships, while Section Four: Moving Forward, Stepping Up, looks at meetings and volunteering. The final two sections: Section Five: The Bigger Picture and Section Six: The Next Level, explore planning, bosses, and customers.
This manual is practical, easy-to-follow, and insightful. Each chapter is well organized, focusing on the the title subject and then exploring best practices and backgrounds. The quiz on attitudes and the chapters regarding communication and relationships are especially valuable, although all chapters are relevant. The author discusses learning from others as well as his own insights into the work marketplace. His exceptional professional credence with his background working for top corporations is valuable. This is a timely book, especially in light of today's helicopter parents, the culture of affluenza, and narcissism. If one can overlook the patriarchal focus (i.e., the chapter on bosses utilizes dozens of male pronouns and no female pronouns, and the quotes and works cited are mostly by men), a handbook of this caliber can be a valuable tool for not only those beginning their employment, but for those changing jobs or just needing a refresher course on self-improvement in the workplace.
