Your Journey to Successful Parenting: Ages 2-11 is the first of a series of parenting books. It is geared toward parenting neurotypical children and offers methods to address issues that may arise, using various approaches. This is important because parents and children have personalities, and a one-size-fits-all approach may not work for every child-parent combination or at any age. Early childhood is the foundation for later years, which is why pre-teen issues are included. For example, substance abuse has its roots in early parent-child relationships as well as peer pressure. I wanted to alert parents that what they are doing now will affect their child for many years to come, not just tomorrow or next week. We live in a time of limited access to therapy, due to location, financial issues, or lack of insurance. The problem is getting worse, not better. The book is a distillation of the more common problems that made their way into my office. The examples, explanations, and recommendations are the same ones my patients and their parents benefited from. I know it works because I got many new referrals from satisfied clients. It is my hope that libraries buy the book and offer it to their readers in printed or audiobook form.
At this time, I’m working on my next book, Your Journey to Successful Parenting: Autism, ADHD, and AuDHD. Instead of focusing on the outward signs of the diagnostic categories, I’ll focus on what the children experience, to help parents understand what their young ones are up against and offer specific tips on how to help their children manage their issues. Parents need to know what is going on in order to be helpful. What is happening now is a concerted effort to make the children more acceptable to larger society. Society is not helping them learn how to work with their gifts and different processing for optimum results and reduced stress.
It is my hope that you read my books, apply the information, and keep it for future reference. It is full of information about common issues. You will also find explanations of the various types of mental health issues that, in rare cases, appear in children. I wrote the book for the parents who cannot access therapy, as well as the do-it-yourselfers among you.
It was a pleasure to work with The US Review of Books. I submitted my book for the Eric Hoffer Book Award. When it made the list of finalists in my category, I was invited to participate in a Book Boost program and the Author Spotlight. It's been a wonderful opportunity to promote my book in another arena. The staff members are experienced and kind, and the process has been seamless.
